The Reading2Connect Library Program
Enhancing Social-Emotional Wellbeing with
Age/Dementia Friendly Books and Employee Training

1

A Program Derived from Evidence-Based Research

As a whole, the field of senior care is severely under-estimating and often ignoring the latent, intact capacity to read that most people living with dementia still possess. The methodology of Reading2Connect is based on the proven premise that most people living with dementia can still read to some functional degree.

Libraries are the perfect places to bring back the joy of reading to older adults.

The Reading2Connect Library Program is a result of the experience and feedback of libraries across the country using our age/dementia friendly books.

Our award-winning, evidenced-based program delivers to libraries:

  • A Collection of Age Friendly and Dementia Friendly Books

  • Supporting Materials

  • Employee/Volunteer Training

With our training, employees learn to apply “Montessori Aging and Dementia” principles, and to use the Reading2Connect Books to enrich the lives of older adults cognitively, emotionally, and socially. Reading2Connect-Certified Libraries serve their older adult patrons inside the library, in the community, and at home.

2

Age Appropriate and
Dementia Appropriate Books

Our age-appropriate, accessible books, with highly readable text and abundant illustrations, enable older adult patrons to enjoy the library experience as they have in the past. The Reading2Connect® Program puts lifelong readers living with memory challenges at ease and nurtures social relationships.

Our books retain the integrity of adult literature. The content of our books varies widely from:

  • popular topics (e.g., pets, sports) to

  • culturally specific topics (e.g., Civil Rights, the Korean War, Judaism, Japanese-American Story).

Reading2Connect® helps aging adults remember, express themselves, and connect with others. Books bring all voices to the table.

3

Multiple Languages.
Multiple Formats.

The Reading2Connect Books are available in English, French, Spanish, Chinese, German, and Italian. Our books come in three formats:

  • Physical books printed on washable, tear-resistant paper for infection control and durability.

  • eBooks to be shown on a device or large TV screen.

  • Video Books (in partnership with CareLink360) to be played on a device or TV.

These three book formats give employees, families, and volunteers the tools to meet the individual needs of older adult patrons who are living with challenges in a variety of areas, eg, manual dexterity, physical movement, vision, hearing.

Employee feedback indicates that many individuals, who have been living with their dementia for several years, enjoy watching and listening to a Video Book with headphones.

Employees have also reported that many older adults, who may appear disengaged, respond positively to our books.

Reading2Connect brings older adults, their hired care partners, and their families into your library. Reading2Connect expands libraries’ outreach and supports partnerships with long-term care communities, senior centers, area agencies on aging, adult day centers, home care companies, and public aging organizations.

NOTE: Reading2Connect-Certified Libraries have free, lifetime access to our online training for future employees. This is critical to ensure that the extensive, positive impacts of Reading2Connect® remain alive and flourishing even with staff turnover.
