About
While the use of visual cue cards for individuals with dementia have been widely studied, little attention has been given to preserving the joy of independent recreational reading in older adults. Like people of all ages, older adults seek meaningful engagement, lifelong learning, and connection. Adapted books offer a powerful tool to support cognitive, emotional, and social well-being—especially for those experiencing intellectual changes. In our clinician training, therapists learn to integrate evidence-based strategies—including Montessori principles, Spaced Retrieval, and Fading Cues—into adapted reading. Participants will: -- Create individualized reading materials --Use Reading2Connect® books for informal assessment -- Incorporate adapted reading into functional and restorative therapy -- Conduct group therapy sessions aligned with PDPM guidelines -- Train families and employees to apply adapted reading for: -- Distress reduction (e.g., Simulated Presence Therapy) -- Enhanced occupation -- Social connection and remote engagement -- Meet CMS documentation standards The training includes two instructional videos, each approximately 40 minutes long. Upon completion, participants earn a Reading2Connect® Certified Facilitator certificate.
